Russell Brand will host the MTV Video Music Awards again this year making him the first man in history to host two consecutive events.

The 33-year-old funnyman caused outrage at the 2008 show when he poked fun at The Jonas Brothers’ purity rings.

However, bosses were impressed with his performance and the publicity, and they asked him to appear again this year.

A pal said: “He is over the moon. It’s the first time ever that the same host has been used for two consecutive years, which means a lot to him.

“He’s had to promise not to offend the Jonas Brothers again, though.”

The comic also poked fun at Madonna and The Jackson 5 during last year’s show and it was later revealed that MTV had asked the star back.

Russell said: “MTV want me to do it again. They were really thrilled. There was a 20 per cent increase in viewers from last year’s show and wow, isn’t life exciting.

“But the VMAs are the hardest thing I have ever done and I will think very carefully before accepting their kind offer of doing it again. I spent a lot of time suppressing the urge to scream a career-ending remark during the show.”
